Munderu Wa Kibugi

My name is Munderu, Made in Kenya, Africa where my heart still resides, I rest my head in Edmonton. Canada. I am a visual artist with a focus on Acrylic and mixed media paintings. My art is an interpretation of social commentary, a critiquing of perceptions, ideals and beauty. I challenge stereotypes and myths of the African Diaspora by addressing beauty in the form of the black man and woman. My art is an exploration of how our identities have been imagined and shaped by societal interpretations of beauty.

I paint about me, about us, from our weaknesses to our resilience. The spirit that takes us through the experiences we go through every day is what drives my art, to create a space of inclusion, dignity, consumption, and subjectivity.
