I have been painting under my pseudo-name of Ned Kelly for 16 years. Painting under this name has allowed me to make paintings that are of a different styles and themes than that of my practice under my real name Neil Horenz-Kelly. I have successfully exhibited under both names and continue to develop both strands of my artistic work.
Since moving back to the coast in 2011 my Ned Kelly works have been largely inspired by the ever-changing moods and foreboding weather and tides of the East-Kent coastline.
My work range from large panoramas, square and more intimate canvasses. My themes are continued on paper with continuous line drawings, colour washes on paper and prints that reflect fluidity and changes in atmospheric conditions.
My reductive abstracts are loosely painted works that build up layers of washes and stains of colour which are over painted in whites, greys and other muted hues. The scenes are intended to feel vaguely familiar through the abstraction to basic elements of form and colour. This intention is so that the viewer may project their experiences and memories of being by the sea into the composition.
