Behind the bright colors and clean lines of these neon and Plexiglass light sculptures, Nicolas Saint Gregoire's art is more subversive than it seems at first.
Since 2007 and his first solo exhibition entitled Show Me the Light, Saint Gregoire has strived to break the invisible boundaries that isolate visual art from other forms of creation.
In 2010, with his exhibition ArtDesign, he sought to transcend the boundaries between visual art and industrial design. The exhibited works are part of a furniture collection - stools, chandeliers, lamps, tables - but are freed from all functional, economic or social considerations inherent in the production of these design pieces. The presentation format - an exhibition in a gallery - and the context in which the works stand, contribute to positioning the pieces as art in and of themselves.
Meanwhile Saint Gregoire is interested in another limit, that between the visual arts and fashion. It is only natural that he turns his attention to the personality and creations of Yves Saint Laurent. He shares with the life and work of the designer a similar interest in bringing together various forms of artistic expression. The fashion designer's phrase "I tried to show that fashion is art" cap...
Between 2009 and 2012, Saint Gregoire realized twelve lights sculptures
These works of art are compositions of laser cut colored Plexiglass plates which are backlit with neon tubes, which gives them a dimension of life.
Light is the center of Saint Gregoire's creations. Whether in his early work of light portraits or in his more recent creations, such as those inspired by Saint Laurent, Saint Gregoire strives to explore the limits of light media as an intangible, but essential, component to his art.
Among the exhibited works, a series of Saint Laurent Mondrion dress creations, from the 1965 Fall - Winter collection, merges Saint Gregoire's research on light with that done on color by the Dutch artist of the last century.
With the Ivory Mondrian dress, the neon light gives a new dimension to the colors. It intensifies the blue, red and yellow in a way that positions each of the colors to be the main attribute. In the Mondrian 2 and 3, the colors gradually disappear in favor of white, leading to the final Mondrian 5, a symbol of virginity where only the neon halos retain the memory of the original structure of the work.
Light again accentuates the naked silhouette of the Wesselman 2 dress and the face of the Wesselman...
