Maro Mitrović

Marojica (Maro) Mitrović was born in Dubrovnik in 1950. He graduated in painting from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Italy in 1972. He lives and works in Dubrovnik.

Mitrović commenced his artistic work painting landscapes with motifs of the Mediterranean vegetation and sun. Already at the beginning, his preference for expressive, surrealist, dreamlike, fantastic and mythical domains became noticeable, having remained characteristic of his work up to this day. Later on, his creations began to include human images, often with symbolic meaning, while his painting occasionally became socially engaged criticising social intolerance, restrictions and the individual's lack of freedom. An inclination towards that which is ludic and humorous also appeared, having left a permanent mark on his work ever since.

In the late 1980s, Maro Mitrović served as the first president of Dubrovnik’s famous Lazareti Art Workshop, collaborating with other workshop members on numerous art projects.

Throughout his artistic life, Mitrović has inclined towards new media and modern technology. From 1985 to 1988 he lived in the USA, studying new photographic techniques and the employment of electronics in art.
