An interest in Victorian Natural History and botanical drawings with close attention to detail informs and inspires the subject matter and themes of my work. I like to create detailed and textural works on paper using a variety of different media such as charcoal, pencil and watercolour, giving each individual drawing the same meticulous attention whether the subject matter is real or not.
My approach is to impart on my subject a sensory textural quality, encouraging the observer to 'feel' my drawings visually, creating a unique viewer experience with each piece. Much of my work aims to challenge reality in a metaphysical sense; going beyond what is physically present on the paper and leading the viewer into a space between reality and fantasy. My intentions are not to trick or deceive the viewer, merely suggest potential elements of existence in reality.
