Phil Mappance

Born in England in the 60's, I had a conventional up-bringing, doing all the usual things in all the usual ways, apart from a rebelious streak which turned eventually into my art.I've never been into traditional art, but found expression and inspiration in a range of unusual approaches.From an early start exploring the use of natural materials applied randomly to ordinary objects, in their original environments, I developed a number of themes, working-in performance as part of the creative process.My works are usually created as part of my normal activities, or as part of a public performance.One theme uses natural clays and muds in situ, creating a two part work - the ephemeral image and form left in the environment, which will return to the natural state, and the colours and patterns left on the artist and my attire.Another theme began in my teens when I rebeled against conformity in a number of ways, one of which was what the experts called "inappropriate toileting". i.e. I started wetting myself, and then soiling myself.
