This is a mixed media piece, on wooden panel. I started it off as a collage, and then built it up. To begin with, I used a 1976 poster from Cuba, with a quote from Fidel Castro: "La aspiracion de las educacion universal solo es posible con la universalizacion del trabajo". There was imagery of soliers with sunglasses, in combat uniform. It struck me as severe and I wanted to show a human side to this militant imagery. Enter the street art supplies: lacquer-based paint sticks, inks, and other lacquer paints. I undid the poster's severity, covering up many of the soldier's faces with paint. The resulting artwork is one with contrasting rough and shiny textures. I've made art where there was military.

"Hi, I'm Claire Desjardins. It's really nice to meet you. I help to create happiness by infusing moments of joy in everyday lives." Claire Desjardins (b. 1965, Montreal) is an award-winning Canadian artist living and working in Gore, Quebec. Working primarily in painting, her formally driven work focuses on gesture and colour, emphasizing energetic, animated brush strokes and bold palettes. Her work is both highly abstract and highly personal, a dynamic expression of sentiments or reactions of which she is consciously unaware. She regularly exhibits her work in galleries and art fairs throughout North America. In addition, she frequently teaches painting workshops and has served as a jury member on several national art prizes. Claire has been involved with various corporate collaborations, including Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Microsoft, Nuvango, Gelaskins, and Shutterfly, among others. In Spring 2019, Claire launched her new signature collection of art apparel, Claire Desjardins, which is sold in stores across the US and in Canada, and in the UK. She has live-painted on stage with the likes of Randy Bachman and Blue Rodeo and Styx. Her artwork was auctioned off, and the 100% of the proceeds were donated to help sick kids. Her work can be found in both private and corporate collections around the world.
