In the land of utopia, all is well Where peace and harmony reign supreme Where every soul is happy, and all is as it should be A world without pain or suffering, where every dream comes true But in the land of dystopia, all is not well Where fear and darkness rule the day Where hope is lost and despair reigns A world without light or joy, where every nightmare comes true These two lands, so different yet so alike Represent the duality of our world Where good and evil, light and dark Coexist in a never-ending struggle But which shall prevail in the end? Only time will tell, and the choices we make As we strive to create a utopia, or fall into a dystopia. This artwork depicts an imaginary future cityscape of New York being occupied by robots and drones, and technical structures. Only one man is featured, and he is hastily exiting the scene from the robot, suggesting a near dystopian future. While Mark M. Whelan's art is primarily portraits and figurative pictures. However, his aim is not to represent a beautiful image of a person or an individual in a futuristic context; rather, it’s an ongoing exploration of the process of how art is created concerning its structure, composition, colour, and technique. Like many figurative painters of his generation, it’s impossible for Whelan to avoid the looming shadows of Francisco Goya, Francis Bacon, Hieronymus Bosch and Lucian Freud, all of which have dominated the figurative world, their paintings both evocative, emotional and full of existential angst and anticipation of an uncertain future. However, Whelan is finding his futuristic path into the light, away from these titans of the art world, his work constantly seeking to go beyond the discipline of representational art and the more gestural expressionism that we are familiar with in the figurative paintings of Bacon.
