About The Artwork

This picture presents a portrayal of a visit to York Minster. The tall spires reach towards the heavens, their exaggerated forms conveying a sense of awe and reverence. Cubist fragmentation disrupts the traditional structure, breaking down the architectural elements into a dynamic interplay of shapes and angles. False colour has been used to introduce an element of surrealism commensurate with bringing forth a memory of a place once visited. My artwork explores the cross-overs between photography, collage, digital art and cubist paintings as a way of capturing memories and imagination. The pictures are created using a pen and ink style digitally, based upon my own photographs, and are printed with high-definition inks on stretched canvas. The stonework, a canvas of history, is adorned with figures that emerge and dissolve as the scene shifts to a different viewpoint, capturing the ephemeral nature of memory. Cubist principles mirror the way memories unfold, with fragments of picture elements coalescing to form a cohesive narrative. Each fragment serves as a glimpse, a fleeting recollection that comes together to recreate the essence of the Minster. The large rose window from the south transept takes centre stage, dominating the canvas with its intricate design. The window becomes a focal point, a convergence of expressionist fervour and cubist fragmentation, symbolizing the intricate beauty of the Minster's architecture. The canvas is adorned with heraldic symbols, adding an additional layer of historical richness. These symbols, fragmented and dispersed, become part of the overall tapestry, weaving together the visual language of history and tradition. In the distance, a glimpse from the city walls unfolds, a fragmented panorama that hints at the broader context of the historical city. Cubist principles are at play, revealing scenes from different angles, just as memory stitches together disparate moments into a cohesive narrative.

I help bring interest to interior spaces through creative and dramatic fine art pictures. I have been a creator all my life from a childhood with construction toys and later as a professional engineer. Having been gifted my first camera in 1969, I have maintained an interest in photography since then, studying the subject more seriously in recent years. I specialise in capturing ordinary subjects and making them extra ordinary using closeups, lighting, colour or editing to help create mood, inspiration, or interesting talking points. I have a passion for taking time to notice the natural beauty that surrounds us, from the depths of space to the small creatures sharing our lives. In my work I try to encourage the viewer to see the ‘everyday’ in a new light by emphasising the extraordinary nature of its complexity or including it an arrangement to suggest an idea or a concept.
