This is a drawing that I completed after the 2022 field season at the Palomarin Field Station. It includes all 78 bird species that were caught and banded (tagged with a small metal band around their leg) and the 8 plant species that we monitored throughout the season. Several people have commented on the craziness of this project - why would I choose to do so much work? Well, there are several reasons, the main one simply being that it’s fun! I am often inspired by the things I see in nature, and during my field seasons I see a lot! But normally I would make some sketches or do one or two proper drawings that you might see on my social media pages. This time, I couldn’t really choose between all the cool birds I worked with! This, at least, was what first sparked the idea for the project. If I can’t choose, why not draw them all? I decided to take a break from fieldwork over the winter. I figured it would be good to have some time to think - did I want to continue doing fieldwork or commit to being a full-time artist? This would give me the opportunity to try the art route for a little while. As I started working on the drawing in pastel, the piece slowly came to life and became a summary of my experiences at Palo. With every bird I drew, I remembered all the wonderful times there, the birds, the amazing scenery of Point Reyes, and the people I got to work with - some of the best people I’ve ever known. The plant species here are our phenology plants, which we monitored for changes throughout the season. Most phenophases are included, although a few were omitted (mostly because they couldn’t fit or I couldn’t get a color match, but a couple of them I simply forgot about ?). The birds are pictured in various plumages - some are juveniles, some are adults, and I tried to balance the males and females. Some even show plumage characteristics that allow you to micro-age them! (Do you have your Pyle guide handy?)

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been drawing animals. In fact, I can't even remember a time when I wasn't into art. In school, much to my teachers' disapproval, I covered my notes and homework papers with small drawings of cats, horses, and a variety of imaginary creatures. In college, I studied biology, and I am currently working seasonal jobs as a field biologist. I love working outdoors, with as much interaction with wildlife as possible. I have always loved animals, and I think it's no surprise that my artwork focuses on the same subjects. I currently work primarily in soft pastels and graphite. As an avid birder and biologist, I am constantly and painfully aware of the many, many threats that so many species and their habitats have to face. From climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution to invasive species, poaching, and wildlife harassment, humans have had tremendous negative effects on the natural world. Through my art, my goal is to share with you the beauty and incredible diversity of our planet, and all the wonderful things that could some day be lost. Treasure the earth and all its inhabitants, for we depend on them far more than most of us realize!
