ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The work, Forest Spectrogram, visualizes sound in various forms through both psychological time and physical time as well as their relationships with human subjects. This project consists of a series of sound visualizations with digital and analog interpretations; each series originates from a sound clip that was recorded depicting human’s interactions with natural objects and ecosystems. The full body of work involves sound as input, two dimensional or three dimensional visualization as output, and the process of the interpretation. Mathematical and computer programming methodology were often adopted to transform and manipulate numerical and scientific representations of these experiences, including Fourier Transformation, Chroma, MATLAB, Python and 3D sculpture design. I dedicate my work to my interests in data science, where I am determined to tie intention and accuracy to the process of translating and interpreting the input as well as my interests in sensory characteristics that are ubiquitous and transferrable. This work references two sound clips: “decay of wood”, recorded in Spring 2021 in Windham, Catskills.

My work examines agency and impact on artistic creation through the lens of humans and environments in the age of artificial intelligence. Specifically, I look to emphasize humanizing factors and art’s impact as humanizing agents through artist’s intent, creation process, spectator’s evaluation, and the interrelationships among them. Various mediums are often used including sculptures, photographs, sound and video. Diverse materials are sourced, from natural objects, food, rope, to glass, color filters, color acrylic etc. The spectators are welcomed to start the journey where they desire, whether is the source, the output or the process of making, all will lead them to experiencing the power of empirical senses and past memory. I am passionate about expressing text, language, and sound as a representation of time sequence and empirical experiences. My work embodies characteristics of these experiences that trigger humans’ sensory and auditory memory. Mathematical and computer programming methodology are often adopted to transform and manipulate numerical and scientific representations of these experiences, including Fourier Transformation, Chroma, Matlab, Python and 3D sculpture design. I dedicate my work to interests in data science, where intention and accuracy are tied to the process of translating and interpreting the input as well as my interests in sensory characteristics that are ubiquitous and transferrable.
