About The Artwork

The Greeks believed that atoms were the fundamental particles of nature and indivisible. In the early 20th century, several discoveries showed that atoms had a nucleus composed of protons and neutrons, except for the hydrogen atom. However, later studies showed protons and neutrons composed of other particles called quarks. It is said that the name quark was inspired by one of James Joyce's books. This drawing is part of the science popularization book "From Black Bodies to the Dark Energy of the Universe," published in 2021. The illustration is an artist's rendering of the deuterium atom, an isotope of hydrogen. This atom is composed of a proton (two quarks up and one quark down) and a neutron (two quarks down and one quark up) in its nucleus.
