About The Artwork

This piece is based on paintings from a travel journal I created while in Guatemala 30 years ago. It's a metaphorically re-make of one painting, thinking about finding peace in a turbulent landscape, and house as representative of the female body. In the making of this piece, I was inspired by Henri Rousseau and Sonia Delaunay. I hope the viewer will feel intense emotion; that s/he will see its beauty and also it's sadness but feel a sense of hope too. I choose tapestry as the medium because I wanted the piece to have warm, softness and be tactile. I didn't want to make a piece that would be displayed behind glass; I wanted the viewer to be able to touch it and experience the piece physically. It is experimental in the way I've used the wool to make marks, creating large marks and varying the direction of the wall and the process of creating the piece was very organic where one line lead to the next, in much the same way as an abstract painter might approach a canvas. When I started the piece, I knew the energy I wanted to create but I didn't have a fixed image of what the final piece would look like.

I work in a mixture of ceramics and fabric/embroidery, both mediums traditionally associated with women and the home and both considered secondary to the fine art mediums of painting and sculpture. I love the tactile, textured quality of these materials and enjoy pushing the boundaries of what is possible using these mediums. My work is about the public/private self and is influenced by the literature of Virginia Woolf. I am currently working on a large installation, ' Kitchen', which develops this idea and explores the world of a middle aged woman contemplating her life.
