I'm completely captivated by free drawing as the mediation of the magic that transforms three dimensions into two, yet allowing shapes, relations and proportions to emerge on paper, generating something that embodies much more than the two-dimensional representation of a subject. I favour charcoal because it offers a powdery, dusty substance that leaves traces on paper in a direct, primal way, and gouache because it brings the charcoal structure to life, vibrating with an earthy, almost sculptural feel at the same time that it offers a surprising effect as if drawn on fresh plaster for a fresco. I seek the intensity of life, the expression of the animating force with its thrust toward growth, freedom and its intention to flourish.
