About The Artwork

The log cabin is a world closer to nature, all handmade, crafted from rough planks for walls and sawn logs for flooring. The images of American Indians and campfires on the wall are the fantasy life. The lap top places the moment in modern times. The combination of laptop and cabin creates at the same time a sense of isolation, an escape but also its own prison. The window is a divide between inside and outside both physically and metaphorically. The red indian imagery is a symbol of connection with a past, tradition, identifying with an imagined lifestyle that fits a modern fantasy. The computer is an interface with the world. The past and the present battle with each other in this environment. The submersion with nature is threatened by the internet that is remote, removed and impersonal in comparison. At play here are the dynamics between old and new worlds, fantasies and realities, remoteness, disconnection. There is a cactus, which is a phallus of sorts for a masculine interior and metaphor for the idle mind. Structurally it functions also as a connector between the lower and upper halves of the composition. A rifle on the far wall is a symbol of death and control as well as an identification with the wild west fantasy, and a suggestion that the cabin is a survivalists hideaway. Outside, snow is illuminated by the light spilling from the window. In the shadows, in front of the dense trees there is a black dog with glowing yellow eyes. It is a symbol of the wild as well as of the bogey man and depression.
