About The Artwork

In the past few years, I have returned to working outside with observational drawing of landscape as my primary source but combining this with my experience of working in CGI, to create Digitally Re-Mastered Drawings, these are only available as open edition prints because the original artworks do not exist in any real sense. In these works, I draw the scene in front of me twice, once in black and white to provide a depth map and once in colour to provide an overlay. Usually, I draw the black and white picture first and then the colour one without reference to the preceding black and white one. I will often return to the same place on different days to redraw the landscape. I aways draw outside using a combination of materials on superior quality paper. I record the time and place for each drawing. The selective power of looking provides an authority in observing landscape that a photograph cannot, particularly as the camera will not judge the observers interest or fascination of a feature. For this latest series I run the colour and black and white drawing through a program written in Processing that samples the colour and creates a separate colour field image and depth map. Where exactly the samples are taken from in the drawing is a matter of chance, the relationship with the original is a matter of the sample grid resolution and degree of chance the program allows something which I am continuing to experiment with. This is an area that I will continue to develop. These two drawings and processed images are combined in software and the resultant image rendered in 3D. The union of renditions of the same view using different palettes gives an additional layer of distress and serendipity to the final image. The nature of the texture perceived in the final render is very important to me. The original drawings are not for sale, but they are available as unlimited edition prints at various sizes from this website, the bigger the better.

I studied fine art painting in the 1980s and then went on to do a master’s degree in computer animation, since then I have been constantly involved in the television industry (mainly in the design of virtual and augmented reality) and have used my time outside work to explore my interest in time-driven art works. I look to apply elements of chance to my work. The serendipitous fracturing and distressing of images has been with me for a long time, I was buying random vinyl records, sanding them down, photographing and recording them and then inking them up to print at college and that spirit lives on. Mostly these days I write software tools to apply synchronicity and use samplers rather than audio tape and a razor blade. However, that systematic approach to deconstructing audio forms with white noise, effects pedals and re-sequencing led me back to drawing as a primary form of self-expression, but I still need barriers to obstruct the process of looking and mark making. In part I have achieved this writing software tools, but the hunt of primary source material led me back to drawing. The creation of the two halves of an image ‘on-plein-air’, the depth matte in black and white and the colour pass, gives me that excitement of never quite knowing what you until the two are combined and you render it.
