This painting started life in my mind when I wanted to combine my love for expressionistic work with the figure, a continual journey within my art. As an atelier trained portrait and figurative painter, I want to continue to break down the human figure both at its point of flesh and bone and also how it is placed within a painting. The academic sitting portraits are beautiful in themselves but I wanted this work to push a boundary both in context and in placement. I wanted to show the influences of expressionism that pushes both emotion of the subject and design element of a larger experience. This is a significant work in my body of work that will encourage me to further develop this concept and I expect as I continue, to develop the relationship started here. I always use quality materials, Claessens linen and the best oil paints from paint makers such as Old Holland, Michael Harding and Rublev. I do not use acrylic paints at all but rather prefer the feeling of applying the best materials affordable at the time.
