ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I'm interested in the commonalities between humans and that of other animals. Our skin changes colors with damage and aging, but creatures such as octopi can change their skin tone and texture on a whim. This piece is inspired by textures and variations created by the flow of blood, bruises and the changes of tone. I wanted to capture the softness and fluidity of flesh as well as the prism of colors that can be present. I chose ink as the media because the ink flows according to the form it's poured upon and I wanted to relinquish control of the flow. I moistened the edge of the desired shape and let the ink sink into it, the colors oozing into each other. Flesh against flesh. I hope to induce feelings of warmth, tactility, sensuality and even a bit of macabre understanding of a heap of flesh piled into a space.

email is sdtompkins at IG is stacytompkinsart I have work available in every price point Two-dimensional work: Inspired by microscopy images, themes of spiritual energy and hidden knowledge, my work explores the invisible realms in which we are enveloped, but rarely acknowledge. Sculpture: My mixed media sculptures focus on the psyche, ritual and meaning-making. The works deconstruct the transcultural aspects of ritual, sacred tool/ ritual object evolution, and the role biology plays in the archetypal development of deities. The pieces raise questions surrounding the origins of belief and spiritual identity.
