Simon Millgate is a contemporary abstract painter and mixed media artist living and working in Clapton, East London. His current work is an attempt to bring earlier digitally composed prints and animation works into the realm of painting. The panoply of forms in these works arrive via disparate means, including automatic drawing, generational algorithms, CAD drawing and laser cut stencils. Marks are arranged in a haphazard fashion to enable new free flowing associations, composite forms and contradictory spatial relations. What he achieves from this process is a liminal space or threshold where the work assumes its own identity and iconography which has evolved directly from its disparate elements. This would it seems be a metaphor for future worlds yet to be defined by accelerating technologies.
