ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Kumari, the Living Goddess of Nepal, is the medieval culture of Kathmandu that is reminiscent of worship of the virgin girl recorded in the regional history from centuries ago. Studied widely by western scholars, this unique culture of the South Asia has also been widely criticised for distancing a girl from her childhood. 'Deconstructing Kumari' is an insider's attempt to understand the psyche of the Kumari - a human treated as a Goddess, replacing the traditional figurative forms with an abstraction and occult iconography. PS: This work was donated for a London charity on 23rd December 2019.
