Jessica Mitchell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she began her formal study of art by attending Saturday and summer classes at Carnegie Mellon University. Later she participated in classes at the Silvermine Guild before moving to New York City. She attended at the Art Students’ League, where she was awarded the Bernard Klonis Memorial Merit Scholarship. Mitchell also trained at the Pratt Institute Graphic Arts Center and Parsons School of Design, New York. Mitchell has been making art for as long as she can remember. The daughter of an architect and a family with a long history in the arts, including the abstract expressionist movement, she was exposed to art and introduced to art making at an early age. A career as an artist was an evitable choice. Her sensibility about life and her art production overlap, as many observations of nature. States of consciousness and dreams make their way into her imagery. Mitchell’s work is episodically narrative and autobiographical in nature. Often the viewer can feel they are being invited to observe a personal reverie or challenged as a witness to a moment in time or directed to the beauty of an object in space. Color, light and shadow are all very important to Mitchell. There is a sense of mystery along side the narrative alluded to in Mitchell's compositions. Jessica Mitchell’s work is collected by Lawrence Saidenberg, Jr. and Lawrence Aldridge, Jack Solomon, Jr., Joseph Grippi, Yvonna Trump, Barry Paley, Peter Palazzo and many others.
