Taking the perfect selfie can be so misleading. Holding a phone too close, at a strange angle can distort how our body and facial features look. We see our photos and aren’t happy with the way we look. Taking selfie after selfie, delete and repeat. We get fixated on perceived flaws and wish we looked better. This scenario is so common it even has a name: selfie dysmorphia. With social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat or TikTok and the use of beauty filters cause people, especially amongst teenagers to strive for unrealistic standards of beauty, are contributing to increases in dysmorphia. Scrolling through instagram, you see many pictures of celebrities and influencers with perfect complexions. Not a single blemish, stretch mark or hair out of place. It’s easy to forget how much these images are edited, what’s real or not. This constant endeavour to look as perfect as them can lead to depression, self-harm and even suicidal thoughts.
