About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by a sculpture by Medardo Rosso which I saw on show at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. I tried to capture the sense of the boy's features being just discernible even as they blend with the surrounding space. While painting I was thinking about objects that we attached meaning and how they carry traces of past moments now forgotten. The title refers to the sculpture that originally inspired this work and the poem by the same name by James Joyce. This celebrate the joy of new birth while at the same time mourning the death of the poets father. I am interested in this double sided and cyclical nature of being.

Sarah's current work explores ideas of time and memory and our transient relationship with the past. Old carved figures offer glimpses into lost worlds of personal and collective histories; they are battered by years but still stand unmoving, not wholly part of the present. She is concerned with ancient myths and allegory as tools to explore wider ideas and is also drawn to objects imbued with significance - relics, religious icons and even photographs – and how they can come to represent, even replace, an intangible idea or belief. Sarah also works in contempory art education and access in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
