I worked on a series of self portraits in 2019 as a way of exploring my changing body and self. The self has always been a topic I return to, over and over, when I'm unclear what I'm trying to say in my work. Becoming the subject, is a way to stay present, and informed about myself, and seek a way to express and confess in a visual way. Much of gay, or queer artwork, focuses on youth and beauty. This is like the world overall, where youth and age are celebrated, commodified, and exploited, while age and especially old age, are made invisible. In my work, I seek to make visible and beautiful that which is often erased or hidden. As with a variety of my work over time, I am drawn to explore the surface of the image, and in this case break or change that surface, but adding paint on top of it. The strokes and textures created by the oil stick, as well as the color, add a narrative and express much for me as an artist. In this era of easy image manipulation via software, I was especially interested in how an analog, manual marking upon the image serves to edit, hide, and also expose the subject in the work overall.
