About The Artwork

Title: First Light Oil on Stretched Canvas Completed with a 1.5" palette knife as the only applicator. No brushwork is present in my work. Sides completed with a gray neutral tone and hanging hardware is included. Depicted in this piece is an anchored boat facing into warm colors of the morning morning sun. The sky values are blended while the foreground tones were left to sit high on the canvas, allowing for a sense of contrast and depth within the piece.

Spencer Yancey was born and raised in Waynesboro, Virginia. Growing up in the Shenandoah Valley he quickly developed an appreciation for nature and depicting its beauty through art. At a young age he began taking lessons from local artist, from whom he learned many valuable artistic skills which he incorporates into his style and work to this day. Spencer made art his primary focus through grade school and into college, attending the Savannah College of Art and Design before finishing his degree at Eastern Mennonite University. Today, Spencer is an oil painter, focusing primarily on landscapes and leaning heavily on an impasto style with a palette knife as his only applicator. Knife painting has allowed him to find his unique style, in depicting various scenes that reflect Realism but contain texture and a loose play on details that hint an Impressionism influence.
