Giverny 1 Print

A sprinkling day in love at Giverny, the home of Monet, brings this painting to light. It is by far the most golden hour place I have ever been, the air perfumed with full blooms. This image started as a warm background of my sentiments following the trip, colors woven over a yellow ochre and magenta background. I almost always paint an underpainting with yellow ochre, magenta, burnt sienna, any color that will give the glow to the canvas I need to them weave above it. True blues and rich violets began to be carved with the palette knife to make shadows as pieces of the scene fell forward : a rusted green gate in front of the chicken coops, green stalks and leaves peppering the ground in between rows and rows of ornate flowers that pock across the scene. Conveniently, the sections were colored in Giverny and lend to a beautiful blend. Finally some wysteria hangs over the edge, a curtain to welcome you to this golden day in my memory and spirit.
