Groundhog Day 1976 Print

My brother who is a well known black smith and metal artist purchased this old mill in the early 70's and in those years from the mid 70's up into the late 80's he raised his children and worked here. We spent many afternoons cutting firewood together out on this property, working on the Mill or just hanging out. The old truck was running and in use well into the 90's. Sadly the Mill fell victim to repeated flooding, and finally had to be destroyed in 2017. The original work is in Egg Tempera, is 36x24 inches and now in a private collection. I have been working primarily in Egg Tempera now for the last 2-3 years. Starting with the construction of my own hand made poplar panels coated and polished with up to 10 coats of marble dust rabbit hide glue gesso which are then polished to a piano key smooth finish. The entire process is so basic and primative. Making paint with egg yolk white wine and ground pigments. Many of them "found" pigments in my own region of VA which is rich in natural ochre deposits. I prefer a loose realism style of painting. Unlike a lot of egg tempera artists who use very tightly controlled small brush strokes. I start with large lose free scrubbles washes of transparent color, slowly building up a base that I then further and further refine with each layer. Most of my paintings have area's with upwards of 100 layers of color.
