I inspired this work with the memory of my Russian grandmother, she never was complex and always thought in black and white. She loved Nevelson. She was challenged by the sixties modernists. I think this might meet them halfway.

Gareth Pitt-Hart is an abstract painter based in St. Louis, Missouri. He works across canvas, newsprint, and salvaged cardboard, creating paintings that explore trace, entropy, signal, and emotional residue. Built through layering, erasure, and repetition, the work balances structure with breakdown. Using acrylic, oil, pastel, graphite, and ink, Pitt-Hart embraces material instability as part of the process. Surfaces may wrinkle, fade, buckle, or soften over time. These are not polished objects chasing permanence, but living works shaped by gesture, pressure, and change. His paintings draw from abstraction, ritual mark-making, and a raw visual language that feels unearthed rather than designed. Some read as fragments, signals, or artifacts; others hold a more direct physical presence. View larger works and the full studio archive at garethpitthart dot com.
