ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting depicts a South Australian agricultural environment. The experience of the landscape is translated through the passage of time. In particular, it is a study of dramatic Spring weather events and the changing perception of depth. The work was developed with a collage methodology. By combining photos into collages, I employ formal devices such as tonal design, alterations of scale, colour intensity of distances and overlapping of forms. The painting features thickly applied paint. Made with highest quality oil paints on stretched linen, unframed, with a wire to hang.

Lise Temple has been painting South Australian landscapes for over 20 years. Her paintings explore the experience of viewing place from changing viewpoints, moving through degrees of abstraction. Her portfolio features lyrical abstract landscapes and abstracted interiors which she develops through a collage composition process. Additionally, smaller outdoor paintings are produced as studies en plein air. Bold colour, generous application of impasto paint and lively brushwork feature throughout. The true subject of the work is always the colour, form and design. The abstracted interiors are intended to represent the passage of time. The compositional elements of architecture and space are manipulated with the objective to intertwine the experience of past and present. The designs are constructed from collected impressions; looking out a window or across a table, walking out of a room, listening to the sounds and remembering a view. She attempts to evoke memories through referencing furnishings and decorative motifs. "In all of my work I intend to insinuate notions of form, space and time but also to leave room for the viewer to become involved in making their own interpretation of the subject."
