Lake Tahoe, Panorama Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the United States, located between the California and Nevada borders; it is the largest lake west of the city of Carson City. The lake is famous for the clarity of its waters and the panorama of the mountains that surround it from all sides. The area, often referred to as Tahoe, is known as a ski resort and as a summer recreational center. In ancient times it was inhabited by the washoe tribe and the first European exploration took place only in 1844. The true human and above all tourism development of the area began after the end of the Second World War. Lake Tahoe reaches a maximum depth of 501 meters, and is second in the United States only to Lake Crater in Oregon, which reaches 594 meters. It has a length of about 35 km and is 19 wide, has 116 km of coastline and has an area of about 490 km2. The formation of the lake can be dated around 2 million years ago. Moreover, Lake Tahoe is the place where the majestic villa of the Corleone family is located in the movie Il padrino - Part II by Francis Ford Coppola of 1974.
