Richard Elliott is a British artist whose practice is primarily an investigation into material process. A graduate of the Royal Academy Schools (1996–1999), Elliott creates "sculptural paintings" where the material itself is often the primary subject. Based in his studio in Rye, Elliott has moved toward a rigorous use of industrial "base" materials, including cement, sand, plaster, and silicone. These substances provide a physical gravity that grounds the work, putting emphasis on the idea of painting as object. His recent work explores the tension between clarity and concealment. Using semi-transparent glazes, Elliott creates veils that partially obscure central motifs, such as maritime vessels which serve as narrative anchors, placing the viewer within the object. Education: Post Graduate Diploma, Royal Academy Schools (1996–1999). Exhibition History: A frequent selection for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition ( 2001, 2002, 2003, 2014, 2017, 2023 and 2024). Current Practice: Operating from Rye, East Sussex.
