Marat was my classmate and best friend. I painted him many times, but portraits were never finished. He was a talented engineer but lived-in poverty for many years in the former Soviet Union. This portrait, finished after his death, is my tribute to him, in my own way. I tried to convey the sitter's...

Motto: Paint what you love — let neither trend nor anyone dictate. Spreading his time between the UK, Prague, and Georgia, Jemal paints whatever captivates his eye and imagination — landscapes, city streets, still lifes, people, and especially the female form. Trained as a classical painter in The State Academy of Arts in Tbilisi, he masterfully combines time-honoured techniques with modern impasto that lends a sculptural, almost three-dimensional quality to his work. Although Jemal’s philosophy of life rests on harmony, purity, contemplation, and simplicity of existence, his paintings are anything but neutral. They dramatize reality rather than merely depict it. While his portraits, figurative conceptual paintings and landscapes tend towards expressionism, exploring emotion through dramatic contrasts of light, Jemal’s still lifes embody a quieter philosophy - Minimalism in Realism - as he himself describes his style. At first glance, these compositions may seem simple, yet every object is deliberately chosen, imbued with symbolic meaning, and gently prompting the viewer to contemplate life’s transience and purpose. Surprisingly, all Jemal’s works share an internal unity that goes far beyond simple stylistic continuity. He allows geometric lines and clear contours to emerge almost instinctively, a fusion of deeply rooted Eastern European visual traditions with the vibrant, angular elements of abstract art and postmodernism, where different artistic languages often intersect and coexist. Jemal's works are not decorative; they requires deep understanding and draws the viewer into emotional subtlety and contemplative depth, always carrying symbolic meaning.
