Autumn Colours is an award winning painting after winning 1st prize at the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery open. A Large textured oil painting of a forest on a late afternoon in October. As the sun starts to go down, it casts shadows right across the forest floor. Which highlights the carpet of autumnal coloured leaves in the foreground and then spotlights the ferns and trees in a clearing in the centre of the forest. Hazel Thomson is a multi-award-winning artist. Her process of painting is almost sculptural, as she purposely adds thick layers of paint and marks with a pallet knife. She then takes away or adds more paint over these marks when dry, as the scene starts to take shape. This gives her work a textual and realist look and feel, so the viewer can be lost momentarily within the scene. In her work Hazel sends out a message of not only the beauty of trees, but also how important they are to the future of the climate.
