About The Artwork

Maldi is my friend's nickname, portrayed here, in a park in Milan, Italy. I like to focus on mundane details, like clothing, the furniture in the park and the red detail of a Coca Cola bottle. I also love to depict men as I think there are still too few men portrayed in History of art. My art revolves around everyday life and I like to depict scenes like this, where I can enhance the inherent quality of the paint. I am very pleased with how Maldi's face turned out: As you can see, since the early days of my career I chose unusual colors to render the skins, as I want to question the assumption that "pink" is the only "flesh tint" as some paints brands seem to want us to believe. It was also common for me at the time to frame the portrayed subject so as to not include the eyes in the portrait as I strongly believe that a portrait is made of so many very important details, not only one's gaze. Some of my sweet obsessions are furniture design, clothing and everyday objects, as you can see here where equal importance is given to Maldi, to his striped sweater, to the benches and umbrella in the background, to the Coke's bottle in the foreground. i like to think of myself as an artist living in the tradition of artists such as Andy Warhol, with his celebration of our era, where objects are incredibly present in our daily lives, and their brands and their designs ultimately influence our choices. They might seem tiny details, but I believe they have an impact on us in the long run and I like to invite my audience to think about these issues, trough my artworks. I also like to "play the chance" and when a drop of painting started dripping I rotated the canvas and it turned out to resemble a tear, which, again, was pure chance but I like that one can see it as a real tear, and make their own story about why Maldi my be crying (what if he is only allergic to grass and tree pollen?!) This artwork is on a stretched, deep edge canvas so there is no need to frame it, as the edges (circa 4 cm deep) are also painted, so it is ready to be hanged on your wall! I hope its bright colors and shapes will transport you to a sunny day in the beautiful and fashionable Milan, Italy, a city that I called home for a while and that was were important for me, as an artist ( I studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera for 2 years, there) and as a human being, the city being very vibrant and stimulating and probably the most "international" of all the Italian cities.

"Mary Cinque is an Italian painter, graphic designer and blogger working and living in the Amalfi Coast. Her works – joyful, bright, colourful painting and drawings – are inspired by this place, as well as her heritage, background and travels. Mary spent her childhood between Italy and Ethiopia. Before moving back to the Amalfi Coast in 2019, she has lived in Naples and Milan, where she attended academies of fine art; and Philadelphia, New York and London where she improved her artistic skills and style. Alongside making art, she works as an illustrator and graphic designer, collaborating with selected brands, working on artistic commissions such as illustrations, labels and showroom design. Cinque’s art develops themes connected with what makes us essentially humans: our habitat – the buildings, the streets, the cities – our bodies, what we eat and how we socialise. Art, in Mary’s paintings, becomes a powerful instrument of philosophical investigation which reveals who we really are by questioning our habits, observing those characteristic traits we share as a species, often without realising it. The artist looks at human beings from a different perspective, making interesting and significant what can seem normal or banal to us in our everyday life: the buildings that populate our cities, the streets we walk, people sitting across our table at a café, strangers on the bus. In this nutshell interview by Giulia Corti, Mary Cinque explores some of the most relevant aspects of her art and reflects on how it offers an intriguing and informative perspective about the way we live as human animals. Mary, your art is colourful and vivid, it mixes human and urban subjects by making use of various techniques (oil painting; pastel drawing, markers, “digital” drawing, print-making etc.) and materials (canvasses, magazine pages, an I-pad screen). How do you choose the means with which to develop an artwork and how do the different materials and techniques influence what you want to convey, if they do? Different subjects call for different techniques. Buildings and urbanscape are always acrylic on canvas, while I prefer to depict people using a quicker, immediate approach, like the one that I can get with markers and oil pastels or digital painting. By looking at the main themes of your art, it is possible to notice what seems to be a tension. On one hand, you portrayed the stillness and artificiality of urban landscapes and buildings (e.g.
