About The Artwork

Abstract Painting, 68"x68", Acrylic on Canvas Red Violet was painted plein air as Artist in Residence at Fruitlands Museum, Harvard, MA, 2014. “Red Violet is an abstract painting completed as a violet work from the series color spectrum red yellow blue orange green violet. It contains swipes of teal, pale yellow and blue/green placed off center, and is activated by lines/marks creating direction and movement. The red color field is made vibrant with overlays of pink violet, with the blues/greens circulating around the perimeter of the canvas. Some colors recede while others appear to float above the surface. Though the colors are cool in hue, the painting appears as an aerial view of the sky or the ocean. In the recent development of my paintings, canvases are trending towards larger surfaces of singular color fields, offset/activated with an abrasion of a contrasting colors/ and or marks.

Painting is my passion. Landscape architecture is my profession. I paint large abstract canvases plein-air by the ocean in Rhode Island, and in the vineyards of Tuscany, Italy. My paintings are about nature, and the nature of painting and drawing. Through color, line, and the creation of form, I search for order and meaning. Thematically, my interests center on the landscape abstracted, and pure abstraction in painting. Aerial perspectives, shorthand figure markings, spectrum paints, accidents, and deliberate risk engage, disrupt, and enhance my Art. Over the last several years, I have completed extended stays at Artist's Residences, including Fruitlands Museum, Harvard MA; Tuscany; Nantucket; and Wyoming. These places greatly influence my work emotionally, and fill my canvases with the light, landscape, and culture observed in these dramatically different environments. As a traditionalist, love of family, world travel, classical literature and music, hiking, and gardening provide life’s greatest pleasures. Galleriy representation includes Saatchi Art, Singulart, Providence Art Club, Arts and Business Council of Greater Boston, DeCordova Museum Corporate Lending Program, and Gallery Twist Richard's award winning art is exhibited locally and internationally, with works sold in the US, Italy, Germany, and Spain, with paintings and drawings collected in renowned public and private venues.
