Willem van der Weide (1980) lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. From 1997 he studied violin at the Rotterdam conservatory, where he graduated in 2005. In the years after he started with painting, as an autodidact. In 2016 he began working on the Dot series. Being trained as a musician, I think of my series of abstract paintings as music. Music is a collection of notes put together in a certain order, transferred into space through for example, an orchestra. It is only when the notes are arranged in the right order the music will sound magical. The dots I paint are like music notes whereas the linen is functioning as the space. The composition of these dots are crucial for the painting to make it work. For me the fun part is to play with the instrumentation by giving each dot a slightly different colour, texture and shape. What I am aiming at is that when someone is looking at the painting the dots will slowly unfold itself into a story.
