About The Artwork

Inspired by a vivid dream about performance artist and filmmaker Virgile Novarina, this piece evolved to include references to another performance artist in my life, Ray Langenbach. I met Virgile at a film festival in Toronto a few years ago and learned about his performance art, which included sleeping in public spaces and taking advantage of that state between sleep and wakefulness to capture secrets of the subconscious in drawings and writings. Ray was a kind friend and influence in my college years whose sleep piece was more about the segments of our lives and the finite nature of it all. This vibrant piece comes ready to hang.

I am a painter and filmmaker based in Seattle. My intuitively created paintings juxtapose serious and absurd narratives with overlays of characters, locations and vibrant color. Place, time and repetition are manipulated to present a filmic journey in a single frame. My art journey has taken me from painting to performance to screenwriting and filmmaking and back again. The different disciplines have informed one another, presenting opportunities to grow and change my approach. The pandemic came along as I was already shifting to working in the painting studio as my primary practice. The strange world we are all navigating - claustrophic, exposed, vulnerable - the emotions and situations forced me to re-examine who we are to one another, and how we can live together in a healthy, compassionate, inclusive way. The Cabin Fever Dreams and Beach series images most directly deal with these ideas. Tom has a full-time painting practice and is actively seeking exhibition opportunities, art sales and commissioned work.
