ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have several pieces with a recurring image of flaming candles. We often use a lighted candle as a nonviolent symbolic way to strike out against injustice or in memory of victims and those who died. I painted the candlelight series primarily using Middle Eastern revolution articles. The Arab Spring was started by a young boy who set fire to himself to make others aware of the difficulties in just surviving and the hopeless future of young generations under the corrupt dictator of Tunisia. My motivation for this painting was the article about the beginning of the "Jasmine Revolution" and how the revolution spread out around other countries through social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. I used a match for lighting a candle to show my reaction to these news articles and represent the protest's beginning.
