Jamie-Lee A South African born Artist who grew up in the vibrant and diverse city of Johannesburg. She moved to Cape Town after studying fashion design in Johannesburg. After dabbling in a number of different careers she finally decided in 2015 to pursue her career in art. Jamie-Lee states that one of her greatest inspirations has been Henry Matisse because of his extraordinary use of colour. A quote that resonates deeply with her from Matisse “The essential thing is to spring forth, to express the bolt of lightning one senses upon contact with a thing. The function of the artist is not to translate an observation but to express the shock of the object on his nature; the shock, with the original reaction” Henri Matisse Since 2007 Jamie-Lee has studied under a number of different teachers, which have all had influence to her style of painting. Before Jamie-Lee decided to leap into her career as a professional artist, she did a number of commission pieces and has recently been exhibited at the Alliance Francaise and Young Blood Gallery in Cape Town South Africa. Jamie-Lee has always had a passion for art and can’t remember a time when she didn’t have a paintbrush in her hand. She is inspired by colour and expresses this in her work using vibrant colours to depict the emotion of whatever she paints. Jamie-Lee expresses that she has a strong connection to the goddess power of woman and this is why her main subject matter in her work is women. She believes that their beauty and power can be captured through their energy which she express through colour. Jamie-Lee Cohen puts her soul into her paintings. There is a definite focus on capturing the soul of her subject through the eyes and colours in her work which she often uses this as a focal point Jamie-Lee has taken part in a number of different art courses at schools in Cape Town, London, Paris and Germany and gets her inspiration from her experiences in life and her travels. She continues to grow as an artist through her travels and exposure to different teaching styles.
