On Aug 6, 1945 the US decided to drop the atomic bomb on Japan to end WWII prematurely. It was thought at the time that an additionally 300,000 US soldiers would need to be sacrificed to take Japan and force their surrender. Initially, Japan decided to keep going as the US insisted upon unconditional surrender and the Japanese wanted to maintain the Imperial rule under the Emperor. The US went ahead and dropped the 2nd bomb over Japan, which led to the final surrender with the Emperor still in power. Many have thought that the war could have possibly ended without the dropping of the atomic bomb, but that will never be known for sure. At Hiroshima, approximately 90-160 thousand perished from the effects of the bombing. At Nagasaki, 80 thousand people perished in the bombing and after-math related deaths. Famous quotes: Eisenhower in 1963: "...the Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing." Admiral Leahy: "The lethal possibilities of atomic warfare in the future are frightening. My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children." Herbert Hoover, US president: "Use of the bomb had besmirched America's reputation, he [Hoover] told friends. It ought to have been described in graphic terms before being flung out into the sky over Japan." General MacAuthor: ...he had not even been consulted. What, I asked, would his advice have been? He replied that "he saw no military justification for the dropping of the bomb." Albert Einstein: "As far as his own life was concerned, one thing seemed quite clear. 'I made one great mistake in my life,' he said to Linus Pauling, who spent an hour with him on the morning of November 11, 1954, '...when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made; but there was some justification - the danger that the Germans would make them.'". From witnessing the Fall of the Berlin Wall inside the Iron Curtain to seeing the National Strike in Spain or the launch of the Euro in Brussels, history and politics dominant my themes. My art process is two-fold. Occasionally, the whole image springs forth like Athena from the head of Zeus while in others the image develops through the painting process itself. I strive to always develop my talent, master new styles and move to new direction similar to Picasso's development. A title must be meaningfully and the art must never repeat itself. I mastered my initial style under the tutelage of Tom Thomas in the Indiana cornfields.
