Maroš Rovňák (1972) is a Slovak artist. His work is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. He also maintains a critical perspective on social issues. In his works, he often combines various media. These range from objects and installations to video art, sound art, and group performance. He explores themes of identity, power, and death. His well-known series of textile objects, Corsets (2001), denounces homophobic manifestations in social and political life. This series was included in the publication Queer!? Visual Arts in Europe 1969-2019 (2019). With this work, Rovňák became one of the pioneers in addressing LGBTQI+ issues in Slovak art. In recent years, the artist has intensively explored Western culture’s attitude towards death. He has processed this exploration in the monographic publication Islands of Nobody (2023). Additionally, he has presented it in several solo and group performances. He continues to devote himself intensively to topics related to the current status and history of LGBTQIA+ communities, which he has recently begun to explore in the medium of painting.
