About The Artwork

The title is from a quote by German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter, Hermann Hesse. Hesse in his search for authenticity, self-knowledge and spirituality, mirrors my search for the same. In this work, the child walks a spiral path, taking on different forms with each move to evolve—imprisoned, anger, sadness, questioning, joy, liberation... It represents a gradual release of attachment to ego. It's homage to Hesse, described by his mother as being: "The little fellow has a life in him, an unbelievable strength, a powerful will, and, for his four years of age, a truly astonishing mind. How can he express all that?"

Ann is a vibrant and prolific artist, wildlife photographer, and author. She was voted in 2020 as one of South Africa's top artists. She initially became known for her ‘ewe/sheep’ series of work. Whilst maintaining her ironic humor she has painted a number of other series of works, including ‘Wild Life’ ‘Zulu Lulu’ and 'Going to the Dogs series. A recurring theme in her work is a play on words and the use of popular jargon. Her quirky, humorous, yet profoundly insightful art, allows the viewer not only to laugh at themselves but to examine many of the absurd aspects of life.
