ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In Yoruba culture, the belief in witches and wizards (known as “osho” or “aje”) is quite prevalent, particularly in southwestern Nigeria where the Yoruba people are predominant. The concept of witches and wizards in Yoruba tradition is deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs and The term “Abara Meji” specifically refers to witches and wizards in Yoruba belief. According to Yoruba mythology, these individuals are believed to possess supernatural powers that they use for various purposes, often both benevolent and malevolent. They are thought to have the ability to influence events, cause harm, or bring about One common belief among the Yoruba people is the idea that witches and wizards have birds in their stomachs, which serve as their spiritual power. These spiritual birds are believed to be responsible for carrying out the actions and intentions of the witches and wizards. The birds are said to fly out at night while their human hosts are asleep to carry out their bidding. The belief in witches and wizards having birds in their stomachs is a symbolic representation of their mystical powers and their connection to the spiritual realm. It reflects the complex and mystical nature of Yoruba cosmology, where the physical and spiritual worlds are intertwined. It’s important to note that beliefs in witches and wizards vary among individuals and communities within the Yoruba culture, and not all Yoruba people subscribe to these traditional beliefs. These beliefs are part of the rich tapestry of Yoruba mythology and folklore that has been passed down through generations.
