THEMES : Crashing dragsters and other horrible motorised accidents, violence. The mortality of the moment. Urban scenes with an uncertain void, the act of not happening. Absurd human interventions in its surroundings, a feeling of faulty scale. Heroes, somehow. Pulled out of the moment’s context by picturing what happens (or what does not happen), by recycling the image and upcycling it to a painting. Downtime. An image of an image, everything exists already. To de-pict and re-order. To write a picture, on top of it and from underneath Painting it gives it an upgraded status as well as a downgraded complexity, that is my struggle. There is no depth in my work, only flatness. The surface and its superficiality. TECHNIQUE : Images are copied on transparencies, that is my canvas. The painted plastic is glued face down in background paint on a piece of plywood and rolled flat, the background paint runs down the sides. After a while the plastic is removed and a totally textureless painting remains. The image itself is created by a combination of background, acrylic paint and acrylic sharpie. Sometimes it bears the remains of photocopy toner. Painting is done in a more or less reverse order, much like painting on glass. Highlights first. MEDIA : Acrylic paint and/or acrylic sharpie and/or copy toner on plywood. Signed and dated on the back. PRESENTATION : Leaning against a wall, standing on a shelf. Hanging flat against a wall. Lying down. No frames are needed.
