This photograph is part of the larger "Abkhazian Tales" project. In 2019, I ventured into Abkhazia, an unrecognised republic under the shadow of Russia. This journey was more than an adventure; it was the birth of “Abkhazian Tales”, a deeply personal photographic exploration. The project captures the struggle for independence, a narrative deeply infused with political tension. This unrecognized republic, nestled in the embrace of the Caucasus and sustained by Russia, resonates with a melancholic symphony of its aspiration for independence. "Abkhazian Tales" aims to capture the emotional terrain of this territory, which is as much a testament to human resilience as it is to political tension. Central to my Abkhazia photography series is an eerie abandoned building, once a thriving disco and movie theater. The sight of a solitary piano in an empty space, and the stark ruins of a theater beneath a collapsed ceiling, became silent echoes of the multifaceted soul of Abkhazia. Each image leads the viewer through the melancholic charm of urban decay, while serving as an affirmation of enduring strength reflected in the timeworn walls. “Abkhazian Tales” is my personal symphony of a land in limbo, capturing the emotions of a place clinging to its identity amidst the echoes of its past and the uncertainty of a politically charged future.

Greta Staknyte, a designer turned photographer, brings an international perspective to her mixed-media art, capturing authentic human moments and histories within urban decay. Recently launched her own space called Spilled Milk Studio. Her work, inspired by a life-changing visit to war-stricken Abkhazia, draws haunting beauty from forgotten spaces and the impact of time. With an emphasis on the interplay of light and shadow, she transforms broken surfaces into canvases for storytelling.
