About The Artwork

This is a hand-manipulated photograph using a vintage 1972 Polaroid camera and SX70 film. I discovered this technique and used this camera exclusively while living in the San Francisco bay area in early 2000. I loved that I could create these painterly images using a camera and some small sculpting tools on the film. I call them "fauxtographs" since to me they are half photo and half painting. Since Polaroid stopped making the film in 2006, this artmaking process is considered a lost art. I have printed these up to size 40x40 on canvas and metal and they are beautiful. I hope you enjoy this artwork in your home or office!

As a visual storyteller, Griffith creates images that invoke memories and feelings from the beauty she discovers in the world. Inspired by a lifelong fascination with abstract shapes, Griffith paints to capture the essence of a place to convey her thoughts and feelings. Her mixed-media art is often reminiscent of an earlier era yet is also unmistakably contemporary, intending to create modern art filled with layers of history and texture. Her work then invites viewers to complete the story by interpreting it through their lens and experience. Griffith often uses acrylic paints, graphite, charcoal, and various collage materials while creating her work. Shen then uses these materials, her layering techniques, and her sense of design to create texture and depth for each piece. Thus, furthering the invitation for viewers to join her in this exploration of memory and history. For her, Griffith states, 'creating is a labor of love'.”
