Lithuania
Šilinta Jančauskaitė, working under the name SHEL ., is a Lithuanian visual artist whose practice centers on photography and image-based experimentation. Born shortly after Lithuania’s re-establishment of independence and shaped by a complex family history marked by women, survival, and silence, her work emerges from lived transition, movement, and inner transformation. Leaving Lithuania at eighteen, she lived and studied across Europe, becoming the first Lithuanian to graduate from the Università di Corsica Pasquale Paoli in visual arts, and later completing a master’s degree at Université Bordeaux Montaigne. Her experience as an immigrant and her family’s history of feminine resilience deeply inform her practice. Using herself as both subject and author, she explores liminal states of identity, femininity, memory, and becoming. Through blur, darkness, and stillness, her images approach the body as material rather than message, holding space for ambiguity, transformation, and quiet intensity.
