Nico van Dongen’s artwork is best described as a fusion between photography and sculpture, where every day, sceneries are transformed into dynamic, time-based creations. The artistic delves deep into the delusion of reality, scratching away to reveal the illusion of what we perceive as real. In doing so, the artist blurs the lines between reality and imagination to expose what’s hidden beneath our perceived experience, opening a door in our search for beauty and truth. Through this innovative work, the artist invites us to ponder what constitutes reality and how the art of observation can lead us to a richer awareness of our world. From Saatchi art: In the real world, we absorb scenes around us with our senses, as our attention constantly shifts. The camera is used as an instrument not to replicate what the eye observes, but the refractions of light camera captures. While in motion we register still images as the experience. I translate this visual journey through time and space, as a single 2-dimensional experience, carefully created by overlaying multiple images. I am driven by an insatiable curiosity of, how our visual experiences are connecting with our mind. What seizes attention at first glance in my photographs, might change with a closer observation. When we shift our gaze, we can see the connection between space and time in a two dimensional plane. Nico van Dongen is originally from The Netherlands and now resides in San Francisco where he works as a designer and fine art photographer. He expresses his creative practice as one in which he visualizes without pretense, seeing art in everything that surrounds him. Nico believes that art doesn’t just feed one’s soul–art is a relationship that is temperamental and demands a response that is pure. Art is always one step ahead; the process is always critical and challenging.
