About The Artwork

Inspired by photographer David Muench and late Surrealist painter Roberto Matta, this photograph of dried mud in the broad playa between the parking lot and the famous hoodoos of Bisti Wilderness in NW New Mexico, reveals the history of at least three rainstorms, superimposed upon each other (hence "Palimpsest). With visually arresting lines, textures, and tonalities, it invites the viewer in, where she discovers the separate systems of cracks and curled mud that suggest rare rainstorms at different times. Comparable in complexity to a Matta painting, yet a depiction of the material world, it continuously repays contemplation. I rendered it in monochrome so that the original brown color would not be monotonous, and to bring out the iridescence among other qualities of the mud.

A photographer since age 13, I've always felt rooted in nature, which continues to astonish me. More recently I've branched out into virtual reality, political and social documentary work. I'm a devotee of Cartier-Bresson, and SebastiĆ£o Salgado, but also Alex Webb, Bruce Davidson, Mary Ellen Mark and Jan Saudek. The truths that I like to tell about nature have a strong component of awe, either in grandeur or in delicacy. I'm always on the lookout for natural metaphors and try to infuse a certain amount of my work, especially the virtual pieces, with humor. (Photo of me by Harry Marples)
