Gabriela Sánchez (Havana, Cuba, 1991) Photographer and visual artist graduated from the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) in Havana, where she studied Cinematography Direction and complemented her training with Art History. Her work navigates between the intimate and the collective, exploring cultural heritage, rituals, and identities woven over time. Through imagery, she builds bridges between family memories and social narratives. Among her notable series are: "Legacy" —a visual study of the women in her family, revealing how traditional patterns, passed down through generations, have shaped their identities and trades, becoming a mirror of resistance and reinvention. "The Art of Waiting" —documents those who have aged in Cuba, resisting emigration while awaiting social transformations and change. Work inspired by Afro-Cuban religion —rooted in the rites inherited from her grandmother, exploring identity as ceremony and memory as shared practice. After moving from Cuba to a quiet town in northern Italy, her perspective expanded, blending nostalgia for her homeland with admiration for European landscapes. Long train journeys through Italy, Switzerland, and Spain became a constant source of inspiration, allowing her to capture the harmony and patterns of nature. A natural storyteller, Gabriela conceives each photograph as a self-contained story while also being part of a larger narrative. Her images immortalize fleeting moments, inviting viewers to reflect on the connections between place, memory, and art. Her work has been featured in publications such as Vice and recognized with the Caracol Award for the telefilm Sal. Currently, she is developing a project that investigates the dialogues between African-rooted spiritual traditions, examining their ritual expressions and their role in shaping communal identities both on and off the island. With a vision that transcends borders, Gabriela Sánchez continues to explore, through her lens, the invisible threads that bind the personal to the universal.
